The German defense manufacturer Rheinmetall has expressed interest in acquiring the military truck division of Italy’s Iveco, a move that could significantly expand its footprint in the global military vehicle market.

The information was reported by Reuters, citing statements from the German company’s CEO, Armin Papperger.

According to the executive, negotiations have faced delays following changes to the initial agreement between Iveco and the Italian firm Leonardo. Despite this, Papperger noted that the companies continue to hold weekly discussions to move the process forward.

In 2025, Iveco reached an agreement to sell its military vehicle division — which includes Iveco Defence Vehicles (IDV) and ASTRA — to Leonardo for approximately $1.96 billion. The completion of the deal depends on regulatory approvals and the full separation of the involved assets, with a deadline set for March 31, 2026.

The unit manufactures a range of vehicles used by armed forces, including LMV family tactical armored vehicles, Eurocargo and Trakker military trucks in various configurations, as well as heavy-duty ASTRA chassis. The sale is also part of a broader strategy by Iveco, which has opened the door to negotiate its civilian business with India’s Tata Motors in a deal valued at approximately $4.37 billion.
